San Jose theater opens lobby as refuge for #BlackLivesMatter protesters

San Jose Stage Company has joined a nationwide #OpenYourLobby movement by theaters to support demonstrators participating in #BlackLivesMatter protests.

“In an effort to support those peacefully fighting for racial justice and systemic change,” the theater has opened its lobby as a refuge, according to an announcement Saturday from executive director Cathleen King and artistic director Randall King.

Demonstrators will find first aid, water, snacks and restrooms at the South First and East William streets complex until 7 p.m.

“Our courtyard will serve as a safe space to recharge and reflect,” the notice said. “Please remember to wear your masks and social distance.”

Quoting playwright Arthur Miller, the notice added: “The mission of the theatre, after all, is to change, to raise the consciousness of people to their human possibilities.”
