With new San Mateo County health order on the way, Pacifica to reopen beach parking lots
In anticipation of a new San Mateo County health order expected to be issued Friday, Pacifica Chief of Police Daniel Steidle announced the city will reopen beach parking lots by Saturday, May 30.
In a news release issued Thursday, Steidle also said beach parking in Half Moon Bay and elsewhere along the San Mateo County coastline is expected to reopen but urged visitors to “check with those agencies for details.”
Steidle said the order is expected to loosen restrictions related to the beach, but added: “the City of Pacifica reminds its community members and visitors to our beaches and trails that we are not back to business as usual.”
“The threat of the COVID-19 virus is still real and irresponsible behavior can contribute to the tightening of restrictions should the virus begin to spread at an increased rate,” Steidle said in the release. “Persons recreating on beaches and trails are reminded to wear face coverings when appropriate, practice 6-foot physical distancing, and refrain from sharing recreational equipment.”
It’s unclear what ramifications the new health order will have for the existing stay-at-home order in San Mateo County, but it may offer a timetable for phased reopening similar to the plan San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced for the city Thursday.
Steidle said annual Pacifica State Beach parking pass holders will be compensated for the period of closure and receive a new sticker in the mail with an updated expiration date. For this weekend and until pass holders receive updated stickers, passes that expired in March, April or May will be honored.
